Hearing God’s Voice – Part 1

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 1

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8)

It was a cool summer morning and as I sat in my room having my “quiet time” I had what I now realized to be a pivotal moment.  I had been taught to spend some time each day, reading a chapter from the bible and praying, but on that day something changed.  I don’t remember what part of the Bible I read, all I remember is that I suddenly realized that God wanted me to talk to Him like my best friend.

I used to pray for good things: sick people to get well, help to do the right thing, for other people to come to know Jesus Christ in a personal relationship.   But on that day, it changed.  I started to talk to God about the very things I told my best friend  – what I was happy about, what frustrated me, what had me excited in the coming week.  It never occurred to me that God would want to hear about those things.   After all, didn’t he already know all that?

On that day I didn’t know the why behind it, I just did it.  Years later, I’ve come to better understand.  God doesn’t need anything from us.  HWe created us for His own enjoyment.  He delights in us.  He refers to Himself as our Father and us as His children.   Now a parent myself, I find I love to hear my children talk.  Someone else can tell me what they did together or something cute that came out of my child’s mouth, but I love to hear it from them!  I love to hear them tell me in their own voice what excites them and what they enjoy, because when they do, they are sharing themselves with me.   God wants us to talk to Him, not because He needs the information, but because He delights in us sharing ourselves with Him.

We can know ABOUT someone or we can know that person, personally.  The difference isn’t in the other person, but whether we have shared a part of ourselves with them or not.

If you want to hear God’s voice, start by talking to Him.  He has been there listening all this time and He is ready to answer you.

I love this!!! I never thought about it that way, but you’re right, being a parent definitely makes you understand God so much more!
