When you want meaning in your life

When you want meaning in your life

Most people these days lead full lives.  Ask someone how they are doing and you’ll most likely hear one word — busy.  Yet at the end of the day with doing all the things we are responsible for, enjoying the things that give us pleasure and spending time with the people around us, life can still feel empty.  Why is that?  People for generations have wondered and searched for the answer.  I think we call this feeling “meaning”. It is the difference between getting through your day and enjoying your day.  Lacking meaning leaves you with the feeling of wanting something more or wondering what is missing. I saw a perfect picture of this idea one night while I watched a movie.  It was a superhero movie with good guys and bad guys, a struggle to...

Choosing to procrastinate

Choosing to procrastinate

Pressure.  Some people love it, but I hate it.  If you want to ruin something I love to do, just put me under a tight deadline and it will suck the pleasure right out of it.  Oh, I will probably still get it done if it’s important enough, but it will be tense and my patience will be stretched thin.  The work that I am doing isn’t really the problem.  It is the environment that makes it difficult. God has been showing me lately that there are ways I can change my environment so that I can enjoy doing what needs to be done…..and surprise, surprise, it’s much easier to be patient. It’s about making choices.  Choices are a parent’s best friend.  Need your toddler to get dressed, give them the choice of the red or blue shirt....

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 5

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 5

Evaluation Report: Who’s Giving it? Reviews seem to be everything these days.  From my receipt after my last shopping trip to the pop up when I finished filing my taxes , everyone wants to know how they are doing.  We as people want, no need, feedback.  It helps us know how we come across, it gives us the push we need to make changes and adjustments, and helps us feel validated and appreciated. One place I worked actually did scheduled performance evaluations.  Even though I was passionate about the job I was doing and I was striving to do my very best, I felt trepidation to know how someone else viewed me.  I was surprised to find out some simple mistakes were viewed pretty seriously and then how things I didn’t put much value in were given some...

When things appear distorted

When things appear distorted

We can have fun with the way things appear.  Fun house mirrors that make us stretch and squish, snap chat, even the warp of a silver spoon will make my kids laugh at their reflection. But what if we don’t realize what we see is a warped perception of reality? I’ve been thinking about perspective lately. I remember learning as a kid how people used to think that the earth was the center of the galaxy and all the other planets revolved around it.  Just how wrong they were! I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea of just how huge the known galaxies really are. Just consider the fact that when you talk about the universe, you have to use the measurement of a light-year.  That references a distance when you travel at the speed of light for the...

Hoarding the good stuff

Hoarding the good stuff

There is something so unique about having children.  It changes you.  It changes how you do things.  It even changes how you see yourself. Being a sentimental person, I have quite a few boxes stashed in my attic of things from my childhood.  As my kids are becoming little people it has been fun to go through and pull out things for them to enjoy.  My childhood friend and I used to have so much fun making up our own versions of things in real life.  Drycleaners, grocery stores, restaurants, banks… I can’t even list all the things we would do.  We get out construction paper and little baskets, find things around our houses and make it as real as possible.  Hours and hours we would play. In my digging I happened upon some of our supplies.  I remember how...

Room to Bloom

Room to Bloom

Bright sunshine, fresh air and blooming flowers are the perfect combination for happiness.  I took advantage of both my kids napping at the same time (yay!) to enjoy some time outside.  It had turned into a beautiful day and I’ve discovered I love having reasons to stay outside for a while.  One of them happens to be pulling weeds!  It has only been recently that I realized this is something I like to do…. to me it’s like organizing plants and I do love to organize.   It seemed overwhelming at first — the weeds had quite the head start, but once I got down in the dirt I was enjoying myself immensely. It’s my love for flowers that motivates me to pull weeds. Apparently I’m a little anxious for Spring because most of my...
