When you want meaning in your life

When you want meaning in your life

Most people these days lead full lives.  Ask someone how they are doing and you’ll most likely hear one word — busy.  Yet at the end of the day with doing all the things we are responsible for, enjoying the things that give us pleasure and spending time with the people around us, life can still feel empty.  Why is that?  People for generations have wondered and searched for the answer.  I think we call this feeling “meaning”. It is the difference between getting through your day and enjoying your day.  Lacking meaning leaves you with the feeling of wanting something more or wondering what is missing. I saw a perfect picture of this idea one night while I watched a movie.  It was a superhero movie with good guys and bad guys, a struggle to...

Producing Seeds – The harvest of God’s work in our hearts

Producing Seeds – The harvest of God’s work in our hearts

Kids say the darndest things, don’t they?  From comical expressions they’ve picked up from people around them to the words they use to coach their sibling, I delight in hearing what comes out of my kids mouths…. well, most of the time that is!   Each of my kids are certainly their own uniquely formed person, but there are many times I see reflections of my own words and actions in them.  If you want to judge your own character, watch your child mimicking it and see what you think 😉 We are now in spring and I see God giving me illustrations of this concept as I make plans for my garden.  For many years I thought being a follower of Jesus Christ meant that I needed to refrain from doing “bad” things.  Jesus had died on the cross as the...

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 1

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 1

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8) It was a cool summer morning and as I sat in my room having my “quiet time” I had what I now realized to be a pivotal moment.  I had been taught to spend some time each day, reading a chapter from the bible and praying, but on that day something changed.  I don’t remember what part of the Bible I read, all I remember is that I suddenly realized that God wanted me to talk to Him like my best friend.  I used to pray for good things: sick people to get well, help to do the right thing, for other people to come to know Jesus Christ in a personal relationship.   But on that day, it changed.  I started to talk to God about the very things I told my best friend  – what I was happy about,...

For the person who feels alone

For the person who feels alone

I recently had the choice to watch the movie “The Martian”.  Within the first few minutes you find out one lone astronaut has been left behind on Mars, thought for dead, while the rest of the flight crew makes an emergency takeoff to start their 9 month journey back to Earth.  Talk about being alone!   By himself with only a few months worth of food this lone man fights to survive and find a way back home.   What entails is an moving story about all that is done to attempt a rescue when it seems impossible.   The distance is enormous, the cost is prohibitive, but it is attempted anyway.  Key people use their influence to convince everyone else that saving a single living being is worth it — no matter the cost.  Even people who want to help or...

Catching Dirt

Catching Dirt

One day I discovered my kitchen had been hosting a cause and effect experiment and I hadn’t even realized it.  It was my fans.  I am well aware of the effect of gravity since I am in a constant battle against the crumbs on my floor, but some time had gone by since I had looked up to see where the dust had gathered. It was probably during a tense moment when I had turned my gaze upward and silently pleaded for help to remain patient that I first noticed it.  My ceiling fan no longer looked smooth…. it was fuzzy. Yuck!  My mind flashed with a picture of microscopic little bugs that I was probably scattering around the room every time I turned it on and I was thoroughly disgusted. When I finally remedied the situation I made a startling discovery.  You...

Crashing Waves

Crashing Waves

I love the beach!  There is just something about the mix of walking on the soft sand, hearing the crash of the waves and feeling the warm sun that makes me sigh in happiness.  I recently thought back to a beach memory from when I was a teen.  I was on a special beach retreat.  A whole weekend spent in a great big old house just a few blocks from the ocean, with a big group of teens.  We were encouraged at some point in the weekend to get “alone” with God on the beach.  I still recall my youth pastor saying how God never failed to speak to him in those moments.  My moment came the first evening on the beach just after sunset.  I wandered a little further down the beach from my friends and wondered what God might want to show me. I watched the little...
