Jumping Life’s Hurdles

Jumping Life’s Hurdles

There is something so majestic about watching a horse jump.  I wish I could say I’ve had the pleasure of riding one and being in the air with it, but the closest I’ve come is watching from a distance.  I was watching a show with horses as one of the main characters in the story line.  Part of the storyline was about a trainer trying to help a horse.  The problem was when the horse approached a hurdle, instead of flying over it, it would come to a halting and abrupt stop. I think inherently I expect most days to be a trail ride.  A nice leisurely stroll on even ground with plenty space in front of me to see what’s coming.  So when some hurdle shows up in my path, many times they trip me up or I lose my momentum and come to a screeching halt....

Choosing to procrastinate

Choosing to procrastinate

Pressure.  Some people love it, but I hate it.  If you want to ruin something I love to do, just put me under a tight deadline and it will suck the pleasure right out of it.  Oh, I will probably still get it done if it’s important enough, but it will be tense and my patience will be stretched thin.  The work that I am doing isn’t really the problem.  It is the environment that makes it difficult. God has been showing me lately that there are ways I can change my environment so that I can enjoy doing what needs to be done…..and surprise, surprise, it’s much easier to be patient. It’s about making choices.  Choices are a parent’s best friend.  Need your toddler to get dressed, give them the choice of the red or blue shirt....

Producing Seeds – The harvest of God’s work in our hearts

Producing Seeds – The harvest of God’s work in our hearts

Kids say the darndest things, don’t they?  From comical expressions they’ve picked up from people around them to the words they use to coach their sibling, I delight in hearing what comes out of my kids mouths…. well, most of the time that is!   Each of my kids are certainly their own uniquely formed person, but there are many times I see reflections of my own words and actions in them.  If you want to judge your own character, watch your child mimicking it and see what you think 😉 We are now in spring and I see God giving me illustrations of this concept as I make plans for my garden.  For many years I thought being a follower of Jesus Christ meant that I needed to refrain from doing “bad” things.  Jesus had died on the cross as the...

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 5

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 5

Evaluation Report: Who’s Giving it? Reviews seem to be everything these days.  From my receipt after my last shopping trip to the pop up when I finished filing my taxes , everyone wants to know how they are doing.  We as people want, no need, feedback.  It helps us know how we come across, it gives us the push we need to make changes and adjustments, and helps us feel validated and appreciated. One place I worked actually did scheduled performance evaluations.  Even though I was passionate about the job I was doing and I was striving to do my very best, I felt trepidation to know how someone else viewed me.  I was surprised to find out some simple mistakes were viewed pretty seriously and then how things I didn’t put much value in were given some...

I think I missed my turn…

I think I missed my turn…

No one likes to wait. From a young child who needs help to an adult waiting in the checkout line, it’s hard to wait. So, why do we have to? I had a childhood friend and I still remembering my parents getting directions the first time they took me to her house. You see, she lived in a developement that was known for its twisting, weaving, intersecting streets. The street she lived on crossed the main road at the beginning, but then did a long loop around the whole developement before it crossed the main road a second time. The instructions were clear: the first time you see my road, don’t turn. Wait, go further down the road and turn onto it the second time you see it. Her house was at the far end of the loop and after the specific instructions it was...

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 4

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 4

Are you sure, God? We want to hear God’s voice.  We want to know what His plans are for our life, what He wants us to do….that is until He tells us 🙂 One of the things I love is a good surprise and I think God made that a part of me so I can appreciate it in Him.  You don’t have to read far in the Bible to see what I’m talking about.  Many times God has told someone what He wanted them to do and their response is something like, “What?  Are you sure?” God gave Noah instructions to build an ark to save the animals God would send Him and Noah’s family.  Okay, that doesn’t seem that unreasonable you might say.  But, at that point in history people had never seen it rain. Enough rain to float a massive boat would...

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 3

Hearing God’s Voice – Part 3

Can you hear me now? The popular cell phone commercial doesn’t air too often anymore, but in it the above phrase was repeated again and again as someone tried out their cell phone service to make sure they still were connected to their phone call.  I think there is a similar feeling with our communication with God.  Do you ever wonder if your connection to God has been lost, because all you hear is silence? If you’ve been following along with this series, Part 1 & Part 2, will get your conversation with God started, but maybe you’re still waiting for a response.  You know, like when you’re busy telling someone a story and get half way through and pause to see if they’re still listen.  Either the person catches the pause and...
